Corporate Social Responsibility-what does it all mean?
We've started to discuss Corporate Social Responsibility in class. We've talked about the "formal" definitions now I'd like to get your thoughts on what CSR to you. What should a company do? Not do? What types of activities should businesses be involved in? Are there activities which businesses should not be involved in?

Most companies enjoy being in the spotlight and more importantly, they enjoy any form of postive P.R. Companies often contribute to chartible things such as fundraisers, walks or runs for illnesses, and donations. This not only helps public image, but also provides advertising.
What a company does not want to do is "sit on their money." What I mean by that is, a company who publically puts out profitable financial statements, but does nothing for its community or employees.
Mike- good observation. Do you think that companies are only looking for the favorable PR?
I think big companys have a obligation to set a good example to the public. For example big companies such as BMW that make millions in profit would look bad to car consumers if they did nothing for the community with all that profit so what they do is sponser breast cancer drives and donate to cancer charities.
By doing this they meet there obligation and show good face to consumers looking for a new car. The bottom line is companies should not let there CEOS buy new Bentlys every year with the profit but give back to communitys and support there employees with good benifits and resources, that is how a company will maintain success and show good face.
I think it's good to see companies getting into things that would benefit the community. Example would be the Avon walk for breast cancer. My mother has been apart of this walk and it is amazing what Avon does for this chartible event.
This Event and ones like it not only help the people associated with it's purpose but the company as well. What great advertisment!
As a customer I would be more willing to purchase or be apart of a company that has done good for their customers and employees. It's nice to know that companies care or at least make it look like they do.
I think that throughout the years many companies have been done a really good job about social responsibility. Many companies do things to help the community and others just to have a good reputation.
I know a company that is making a difference by giving back to the community. It is called Auntie Anne's most of you might know this company for their famous pretzels. Auntie Anne's is Celebrating its 20th Birthday by rewarding 20 Giving Families, and to celebrate its 20th birthday, Auntie Anne's is rolling out a nationwide search for families who do community services, together can be nominated by themselves or another person for an opportunity to win grants that will help support their humanitarian activities. One grand prize family will receive a $20,000 grant nineteen finalists will also be selected and each will receive $2,000. Grants are to be used to fund the winning families' charitable work. The 20 winning families will also contribute to an e-book called "20 Ways to Give Back," telling their stories and sharing real-life examples.
This is a good way of advertising this company and also a good way on helping a family. Many families would help the community and at the same time would have a chance to enter to the contest in order to win the grand prize. Me as a costumers I would be consuming the products of this company because I know that they are giving back to the community.
It would be nice if more companies gave back to their communities. A compcny I used to work for gave back to the community in several ways. First off besides sponsering softball & baseball teams in the summer, also had a volunteer program with the school district ( employees donated time & the company donated x amount of dollars per hours worked. The also donated used computers to the schools. For their employees they reconized their employees for a job well done. Good benefits, employee appreciation day (including gifts, holiday parties etc.. This was 1 company I knew of personally that gave back to the city it resided in as well as surrounding communities.
I think companies doing good for the community. Will assit them in the long run by having the communities support. Will show the people they have good ethics. Many company support education by helping with scholarship or will pay for a employees education. Think a company shouldn't do is not support their employee, because they will develop a reputation. They might give a lot of donation and help education, but none of that would be possible with out employees.
There are companies out there that like to help their consumers they know that if they do something good for the people that they will receive a benefit back. Companies that always offer there help and give good donation to other organizations that need it. Like Dominos pizza they use the logo for St. Judes in their pizza boxes sometimes it might look like there are trying to take advantage but I think its better to do it that way just to show their support to the organization. By doing this costumers know that is not just about sales but to help their people.
I think that most of the companies do something for their people by giving them donations or just making a difference. When this companies do something remarkable people remembers and more likely to follow them as buyers or just to be a loyal customer. But it feels great when you know that companies try to do the best for their people and they also succeed because they have the help from their public.
I think that most of the companies like to be recognized by their customers and for that reason they do something valuable that people can remember easy. I think if companies are make money they shoul also do something nice for their socity like mcdonals they help their organization for the kids that are ill something like that means that they have a good heart and care for the community not just their money...
