Refreshingly honest or irresponsible?

I found this article on the Wall Street Journal website regarding Wal-Mart and their "green efforts".

As you will read, although Wal-Mart has been touting that it is "going green" it still isn't there yet. They mention that their main motivation to drive out waste or better said "to make more money".

Do you find this suprising from the World's Largest Retailer who has been known to "squeeze" vendors to get more profit out of them? In your opinion, does it matter what the company's motivation is- profitability or making the world a better place- when it comes to corporate responsibility? Does it take something away from a company's corporate responsibility efforts when they mention that they are looking to increase profitability?

Here is the link to the article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120546648773336113.html

Here is a summary from the March 14th Wall Street Journal
Lee Scott Jr. announced at WSJ "ECO-nomics" conference that despite Wal-Mart's focus on going green that they are not there yet.
Mr Scott was questioned as to why if the company is going green that Wal-Mart's carbon emission footprint is growing. He said that the reason for this is because that in order for Wal-Mart to grow they must continue to use energy.
He then stated that "The impetus for the company in doing all this isn't just to please environmentalists, he said, but to save money."

This is no surprise to me at all. How do you think Wal-Mart became the largest retailer? The problem I see is that this just shows Wal-Mart as a money hungry corporation that doesn't care for anything else but how they can make more money. In my opinion there should be no reason for Wal-Mart to not focus on going green. They are already at the top I don't see the problem in taking a few from their billions to whats right and help the environment.

Walmart is a HUGE company, multi-billion even trillion dollar company...why can't they spend some of that money to help and show their care for the environment? Well, they can. I don't think Wal-mart would take a big hit in doing this. In fact, I think that more people would prefer to shop at a store that shows interest in the environment. This would make them stand out over their competitors (Target, K-mart). For example, if Wal-mart focused on more enviromental friendly productions it would make headlines. I would love hearing more about large companies like this making changes to satisfy their consumers, rather than their checkbooks.

Well... its really make sense that they would be that way. being a squeeze vendor. I think they should make an effort to save greenhouse gas. They could at least squeeze that out. I don't think they really care honestly. People are gonna shop there no matter what. There going to be green no matter what they do.

I dont believe that walmart should have claimed anything green to their name. The are definitely doing to promote and drive their own sales. Personally I do not think walmart is really all that concerned with the environment when very few businesses are. if they do decide to actually go green in any way, they are just showing how money hungry they really are.
