We've been critiquing companies as to what they are doing to contribute positively to the environment in which they operate. As we close this exercise, I'd like to ask you what can you do to make a positive impact on the environment?
National Geographic aired an interesting documentary titled "The Human Footprint" where they show exactly how much waste every American will generate in the course of his or her lifetime. This includes things the foods we eat, the personal hygiene products we use, the clothes we were and the resources that go into making those products.
I'd like you to check out the link to National Geographic located here:

Please take a look at the "Carbon Calculator" - and see what you can do to reduce your carbon emissions. Please post your thoughts to the recommendations here.

I entered my information into the carbon calculator and was amazed at the amount of waste my wife and I create. What's even more alarming is the fact that I think we do more recycling than most households. In fact, I actually joke with her and call her the "recycle nazi."
What should we do? Well, there are the obvious things such as recycling, turning your heat down when your not home, and carpooling. Increasing laundry load size and washing in cold water is another way to reduce energy use.
Businesses such as mine waste so much paper. Instead of throwing that paper in a garbage can, place a bin next to the garage can for paper only. If your business owner isn't willing to recycle, ask a coworker to take the paper home and recycle it.
I think most people aren't willing to take the extra step because they feel it is burdening their lives. The reality is taking the extra does require additional work, but just a little extra thought
Like Mike, I also added all relevant information into the carbon calculator, and I was stunned do to the fact that my household is quite environmentally friendly; or so I thought. During the winter months I'd consider my house an ice box do to the fact that we conserve as much energy as possible. Friends would even tell you walking into my home can sometimes be a dungeon do to there being hardly any lights left on and or televisions. I believe investing in environmentally friendly products is a great step to take. From washers and dryers, to computers and monitors there are all sorts of energy saving alternative products. My work, however; is quite efficient. All cardboard is recycled and plastic as well. The only thing I could think of is the styrafoam. At my old job we recycled mounds and mounds of this material into small 50 pound blocks that were then sold back to the makers. Though my new job does not have the machines to do this, I think it would be a solid investment as far as turning your waste into profits and it would definatly be a profit to the struggling environment.
Wow after i entered my information into the carbon calculator and I couldn't believe the amount of waste my family and I create. I thought I was doing good by reducing the amount of electricity we use, using my car less, and recycling everything possible. I had no idea that with all that I was doing my house would still be creating that much waste. I took a look at how I could reduce the carbon emissions and just by putting in those light bulbs I can cut it down by ten percent. I think I'm going to have to start reading up on more of this and start doing what I can to reduce the amount of waste I create.
I was suprised to see how many appliances make up for the carbon in the world. There is only so many things you can do to help though. You can start of by buying energy efficient washer and dryer, and electric lawn mower, or the energy absorbing windows to heat a household. We could all cut down on the tv for sure, and take a walk instead. Or quit driving everywhere, when you could walk. And if just absoulutely have to drive, consider a hybrid, most of your driving is under 30mph anyways, so the gas engine part of the car wouldn't kick in at all. Most just use the electric motor to start the vehicle and drive in the city under 30mph. There are many possibilites that are easy to accomplish, we just have to be dedicated.
I did the calculator and was shocked. However the biggest is the cars that I have. I have to drive on average at least 22,000 miles a year and that produces a lot of waste. Both my wife and I work far from home.
I am going to help by car pooling with co-workers that live out my way. The co-workers and I have come up with a plan and hope that it will work. We will not only be saving on money but helping pollution to.
Well i think the things i can do mainly to preserve energy is mainly stop driving so much. In my house we do as much as possible to save energy. So we already recycle and do not waste energy. I think the main thing i can do is spread the word... or help people save money on there bills.
I was sorprised when I entered the information into the calculator. I could't believe what are we doing, and I did't have an idea the amount of waste I do. We can reduce this if everyone coperate like stop driving as much we can, recycling everything as possible, and reducing the electricity. The rea alot of thing that we can do if we do together and at the same time.
after entering my information into the carbon calculator i was so shocked of how much energy my family waste.
just lilttle things that i could change it could make a difference
we do recycle but we do not save enrgy for example sometimes my brother would leave the tv on during the nights when he is not even whatching it or sometimes he is getting late for work and then he just leaves the computer on little things could make a difference in the future.
